This month's challenge
"Knock Yourself Off" is all about re-visiting a subject or technique you've done before to see the progress you've made in your art "journey". To recap, I began doing portrait sketches in May of '07 after dh gave me a sketchbook for my birthday. Above is one of my early attempts done in August '07. Not bad but not really 'finished' either. Just for practice, not worthy of a frame but good enough to keep (safely tucked away in my sketchbook)

Second attempt a few months later with a new technique and a little more confidence. Sharpie and watercolor-no pencil. Again, nice enough to keep but for-my-eyes-only. (until now)

Okay, I've said this before but
Michelle has really outdone herself this time. CRUSADE #32 has caused a personal breakthrough for me. I started with a 'shadow painting' added bleach and after it dried I went back in with a pen for the details. I'm calling this one a
painting-not a sketch. Over time, a few people have said they like the somewhat 'unfinished' quality of my work. One gallery owner said my work is 'fresh'. SO . . . . . it's okay to be a little "unfinished" that's my
STYLE! Happy weekend, and thank you again Michelle for your inspiration and the Crusades . . . . I'm off to buy a frame!

My goodness! This is beautiful! Well done!!!
really beautiful.
Thanks for sharing your progression.
Jane - all three of these are lovely! I really appreciate that you have revealed each of them and told the story of your process. Very cool to see how you have journeyed along and been able to revisit portraits in varying styles. I am even more impressed as I shy away from doing faces - you really rock them in a unique Jane way. Thanks for sharing with the team, and for always being such a generous and enthusiastic player. xo
I love your style!! I get away with murder using the term "shabby-chic" instead of admitting that I hate finishing things properly!!
Your original sketch was great; I love the final result though. You have a real talent for portraits - I'm envious!! =)
i too love these challenges, and you're a perfect example, jane.
so glad you kept her. she is just exquisite and mysterious. again, my only wish, to see it up close and personal...i would probably swoon, seriously. and then to see her framed, oh my GOODness! love love love love love the hat! xo wanda
I think they are all wonderful. It is nice to see the different stages.
Thanks for the sharing.

ahhhh, SO beautiful! you are so very artistic!
love all of these so much!
YES, frame her - yes, yes, yes.
I really love what you've done with her! Terrific job!
Nice, Jane! What a great series of paintings!!
I really enjoyed seeing the progress with this painting! The latest one is so soft and flowing. Love the blurred lines.
Great post and love what you've done. I so feel your result should be framed! Beautiful! There's a softness to the face and hair; a dreamy expression! Just fantastic!
I think they are all beautiful and would frame the lot, as they demonstrate different techniques and and have their own artistic qualities. I quite like the first piece as my first preference, if I had to choose only one.
Thanks for sharing this with us, I can really see your progress and you becoming more brave and comfortable! It's so cool that the drawings are so alike but still not, that the subject has her head tilted the same way etc. I love it!
Marvelous! I haven't touched watercolors since the disastrous picture I made as a kid in art class (back when public schools still had art class). The bleach was a brilliant idea and execution. Whoa, Nelly!
Yes, this one certainly deserves a frame. I'm glad you showed the other two also. seeing the progression is interesting.
This is indeed far more than just a sketch(which to me is just for practice). It is an actual painting complete with all the needed elements to make it expressive and very beautiful. I love the softness of your color application the calm expression and those swirls. Even if this is replete of you somewhat unfinished trademark, it retained the serenity and freshness nevertheless.
It was interesting to see this evolve and the end result is so beautiful! I like the somewhat unfinished look, too. I wouldn't really call it unfinished, but I can't think of a good word for it. I don't think you have to show every detail for it to be finished. The bleach idea is cool. Will it deteriorate the paper very quickly, or does it neutralize quick enough to not make a big difference?
Jane, your style is wonderful. And yes do buy the frame.
wonderful!!!
I love all three and think they all deserve displaying
Fabulous pieces - my favourite is your last one - I love the soft mood of it -
nice faces, but I like the final one most. I especially love what you have done with her eyes.
greetings from belgium

What a lovely piece, love the original one but also the final one.
Thanks for showing your progression and process, really great to see your beautiful art developing!
I like all 3 drawings too..the colour added to the last one is great...thanks for talking about your art style
Wow, that is an amazing amount of artistic growth in such a short time. But it looks like you started out with more than your fair share of talent! Gorgeous!
These are beautiful!
