THE DARK SIDE

It's just so much FUN! This month's crusade is to begin a journal page on a black background.
If I had known I would like the results this much I would have photographed the step-by-step.
Anyway here is my technique:

1) Slap a thick coat of "Texture Magic" onto illustration board, let dry (overnight).
2) Paint it black, let dry.
3) Paint (acrylic) a light area over the black for the face, let dry.
4) Rub metallic gold paint on edges to bring out the texture.
5) Spray glue white tissue paper over the white area, let it overlap, don't be too careful. :-)
6) Paint in features of the face. I used watercolors but any paint will do. The tissue soaks up the paint so the features are rather crude, which adds to the creepy-ness, I think.

The nooks and crannys of the texture and the subtle texture of the tissue will make rough 'skin'
and goulish scar-like places on the face.

As always Michelle, thank you for another excellent Crusade!

I like this - not scary to me but more evocative of a memory...perhaps an old sepia print? Very nicely done!

Your art is so beautiful it's hard to make it look creepy, but this is a very cool technique.

This is really fascinating and thankyou for explaining the processes involved. But can you tell me what 'spray glue white tissue paper' is? Is it a special type of glue? Thankyou. Ann from UK

Texture Magic? I'm going to have to look that one up since I'm unfamiliar.... just spent the weekend with Michelle up @ Valley Ridge and had a fabulous, amazing, wonderful time...I'm sure Michelle will be blogging about it very soon.

Gosh, the texture works wonders in this piece - the face really comes alive (or should that be dead?). Thanks for sharing your process with us.
